A shortest path, not a signed route

There is no hiking relation in OpenStreetMap here, only unnamed paths and tracks. This line is the shortest way through that network from the summit outward — Dijkstra over 6,428 nodes — which is a defensible route and not necessarily the one a guide would walk you along. Where the mapping is thin, so is the claim.

What the route itself tells you

  • Half the work is downhill

    The ridge climbs 1250 m and descends 550 m across eleven kilometres. Anyone planning around net height gain will get the day badly wrong, and the descent is on tired legs both ways.

  • The trail on the map stops before the base

    The connected path network ends 1397 m short of Cloud Farm, where most walks start. That stretch is simply not in OpenStreetMap, so it is not drawn here either — do not read the start of this line as the start of the walk.

  • The peak next door may be higher

    OpenStreetMap tags Manna Malai — about 800 m off this trail — at 2659 m, against 2636 m for Meesapulimala. Neither carries a survey citation, which is worth knowing before repeating the "second-highest in the Western Ghats" line.

  • It is a high grassland, and it behaves like one

    Nothing on this route drops below 1909 m and there is no tree cover on the ridge itself — the terrain here is shola and grass, wooded only in the folds. Weather arrives with nothing in the way of it.

  • Access is controlled and this page cannot tell you how

    The Meesapulimala trek is run through licensed operators and forest permissions that change season to season. This page has no live source for any of it, so treat every access detail — including any you read elsewhere — as needing confirmation before you travel.

A jeep from Munnar as far as the Silent Valley estate. That is where the tea stops and the grass begins. Beyond it you need KFDC permission, and a guide is not optional.

The rhododendron valley

ഈ ഉയരത്തിൽ റോഡോഡെൻഡ്രോൺ വളരും — ഹിമാലയത്തിൽ കാണുന്ന അതേ ചെടി, പശ്ചിമഘട്ടത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും ഉയർന്ന ചോലക്കാടുകളിൽ ഒറ്റപ്പെട്ടുനിൽക്കുന്ന ഒരു കൂട്ടം. ഏപ്രിൽ-മേയ് മാസങ്ങളിൽ പൂക്കും.

Rhododendron grows at this height — the same plant as the Himalaya, marooned here in the highest shola of the Western Ghats. It flowers in April and May.

കൊടുമുടിയിൽ നിന്നാൽ ഇടതുവശത്ത് കേരളം, വലതുവശത്ത് തമിഴ്നാട്. താഴെ കൊളുക്കുമല, അതിനപ്പുറം തേനി. ആനമുടി വടക്ക് കാണാം — ദക്ഷിണേന്ത്യയിലെ ഏറ്റവും ഉയരമുള്ള കൊടുമുടി, ഇതിനേക്കാൾ വെറും അമ്പത് മീറ്റർ കൂടുതൽ.

Stand on the top and Kerala is on your left, Tamil Nadu on your right. Kolukkumalai below, Theni beyond it. Anamudi is visible to the north — the highest peak in South India, and only fifty metres taller than this one.
