8.47 km here, against the 13 everyone cites

Almost every account of this trek calls it thirteen kilometres one way. The mapped trail — the full named path, end to end, with no gap between its two ways — measures 8.47. A walk-in from the town, or switchbacks too tight for anyone to have traced, would each account for some of the difference. Neither is measurable from the data, so both figures are here and neither is preferred.

What the route itself tells you

  • Carry water from below Bhattara Mane

The one tapped source on the mapped route is at km 4.19, at 852 m. Above it there are 4.3 km and 864 m of climbing with nothing marked.

  • Sesha Parvata is not the summit

It looks like one, and people stop there. From its top the real peak is 159 m higher and a kilometre further, across a saddle that gives back some of what you have just climbed.

  • The hardest part is above the shrine

The steepest kilometre of the whole walk starts at km 6.21, just past Kallu Mantapa: +322 m. If you are pacing the day, pace it around that.

  • Bhattara Mane is the last roof

At km 3.94 and 849 m — under halfway by distance, barely half by height. Everything above is open ridge.

  • Check the forest office before you count on anything

This runs through Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary. Entry rules, fees, daily caps and whether camping is allowed at all change from season to season, and this page has no live source for them — so treat any figure you read elsewhere, including here, as needing confirmation on the day.

Community GPS tracks — not used Not open
Recorded tracks on sites like Wikiloc give longer distances than the mapped trail does, and would probably explain some of the gap. They are uploaded by individuals and not openly licensed, so nothing from them is in this page — including the figures.

Terrain colouring and vegetation in the 3D view are impressions. The landform, the path, the waypoints and every elevation are measured. Vertical scale is true in both views — nothing here is exaggerated.

The path behind the temple

At five in the morning Kukke Subramanya has not woken. Only the first bell of the temple carries. The path starts left of the bus stand, over the Kumaradhara bridge, under a small board that says nothing more than the name of the mountain.

You write your name and number at the forest checkpost. Plastic bottles are counted into a register, and the same number has to come back down. It is not a formality — the whole path runs inside the Pushpagiri sanctuary.

Lunch at Bhattara Mane

Six kilometres up, the forest opens without warning onto a tiled house, a yard full of shoes, and a kitchen behind it. Bhattara Mane has been the only shelter on this mountain for over fifty years. Call ahead and there is a meal; do not, and there is not.

Most groups spend the first night here. There is a hall to sleep in and blankets to rent. The generator goes off after nine, and after that there is only the forest.

Kallu Mantapa and the grassland

Past Bhattara Mane the forest ends and the grass begins — shola grassland, which exists at this altitude in the Western Ghats and almost nowhere else. The wind arrives unobstructed. Kallu Mantapa is a heap of stone and nothing more, but it is somewhere to get under when the rain comes.

Shesha Parvatha, which is not the top

Shesha Parvatha looks like the summit. It is not. You climb it, drop off the back, and climb again — and it is this last two kilometres that earns the trek its reputation.

There is no water after Shesha Parvatha. Carry three litres a head. The mist comes in after noon and visibility drops to twenty metres.

When the sun comes at half past six the whole valley is cloud, with the peaks standing out of it like islands. They say you can see the Arabian Sea to the west on a clear day. We did not. To the east, the hills of Kodagu.

Going down is not easier than coming up. Use poles if your knees have an opinion. Reach Bhattara Mane before noon and there is one more meal waiting, which is reason enough for some people to hurry.
