You cannot simply walk up Agasthyakoodam. Forest department booking opens in December, the season runs from mid-January to early March, and a hundred people are allowed a day. For the other nine months the mountain is closed.

It starts at the Bonacaud picket station, past the ruins of an old tea estate, and the forest closes in. A guide from the Kani community walks with you — this is their forest, and they know it.

Fourteen kilometres in is Athirumala: forest department sheds, a kitchen, a small stream. Everyone stops here. The summit is only six kilometres further, but it is not a path to take in the dark.

The last two kilometres are not a climb but a scramble, with ropes fixed on the rock. At the top there is an idol of the sage Agastya. For many people this is a pilgrimage first and a trek second.
